TESTIMONIALS

WHAT IS JUDO?

Judo, stemming from a martial art, has evolved into a sport governed by a stringent set of regulations to ensure both competition fairness and participant safety. It offers a wide spectrum of competitive opportunities, ranging from local club contests to provincial, national, and even Olympic-level competitions. These competitions are further divided by gender, age and weight categories.

While renowned for its dynamic throwing techniques, Judo also incorporates ground grappling techniques, including specialized pins and control holds arm locks and chokes. Arm locks and choking techniques are restricted for young practitioners, underscoring the sport’s commitment to safety.

Beyond physical fitness, Judo instills valuable life skills such as self-confidence, self-respect, and respect for others. It serves as a platform for developing qualities like concentration, leadership, and enhancing physical attributes such as coordination, strength, flexibility, and mental well-being.

As an Olympic discipline, Judo falls under the jurisdiction of The International Judo Federation (IJF), with 204 countries worldwide participating and affiliated with the IJF.  Brazil, for instance, has a staggering 2.5 million registered members, while France with an impressive 700,000 Judo practitioners.  Furthermore, in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, 138 countries fielded teams in the sport of judo.

Currently Canada is moving up the ranks world wide.  As of September 2023 Canada was ranked 17th in the world out of 204 countries, and has the #1 and the #2 female in the -73kg category.
